In Memoriam of Mrs. Virginia Sothoron.
-------
“Smooth the braids of her silken hair
On her queenly brow with tender care;
Lay on her bosom pure as snow,
The Fairest, sweetest flowers that blow–
God understands–His ways are right–
In dreamless peace she will sleep to-night.”

On Tuesday, July 25th, Mrs. Virginia Sothoron passed to the higher life. Mrs. Sothoron was the daughter of Rev. Lewis Sutton, of Baltimore, Md., and with her husband and family removed to Greenville many years ago.

- During the civil war her husband responded to his country’s call, but ere long his name was enrolled in the silent majority, and then it was that the pathway of the devoted wife grew bleak and cold. The winds of adversity fell chill upon one whose life had been shielded from every storm–but with high moral heroism and christian courage she rose superior to the darkness of the hour, and thence on, to the hour of her death, she patiently, beautifully, lived for her children and others; and the world is better because she lived.

- Through two long years of illness her spirit reposed on the calm heights of those who behold the “Gates ajar”, and with a faith that never wavered, when the summons came she was ready.

- In the death of Mrs. Sothoron a home is left desolate, and a beautiful presence has vanished from our midst, but, more enduring than sculptured marble, the lovely christian character of our departed sister has wrought an influence upon the hearts and lives of others that will bear an impress beyond the sores of time to the farther shores of eternity.

- Our tears fall for the sorrowing children and relatives.

“But not for the soul whose goal is won,
Whose infinite joy is just begun,
Not for the spirit enrobe in light
And crowned where the Angels are to-night.”
